Francesco Starace, the CEO of Italian energy giant Enel, has been appointed to the European Commission's platform for the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Starace will represent one of only two private sector members on the 30-strong panel, which will support and advise the European Commission on the delivery of the SDGs at EU level.

With the platform made up primarily of members from civil society and non-government organisations, Starace will be the voice of business - Enel are set to play a leading role in energy transition and sustainable development.

Among the 17 SDGs is the vision to build sustainable cities and communities, take responsible climate action and transform the use of 'affordable and clean energy' by 2030.

"The sustainability of the EU social and economic model is a key responsibility of all us Europeans," said Starace.

"We owe it to the future generations of EU citizens, and also to the rest of the world, to indicate that there is a sustainable path for growth in societies worldwide.

"Enel's engagement in sustainable development is an integral part of its business strategy and I am proud to represent the group as well as the Italian private sector."
